Media Eye News Bureau: Canada recently withdrew an invitation regarding an alleged Sikh extremist who was scheduled to attend an official dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who is on a first state visit to India. Trudeau further asserted that Jaspal Atwal should never have been invited to the event.

An Indian origin citizen of Canada, Jaspal Atwal was convicted and then acquitted of trying to assassinate an Indian minister in 1986. He as well as three others was convicted of shooting Indian minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu while he was in Vancouver on a personal visit. Sidhu was hit twice but survived the attack. He was however assassinated in India in 1991. He has also been accused of being a member of a now banned Sikh extremist group.

Speaking on the same, Trudeau stated, “Obviously we take this situation extremely seriously. As soon as we found out we rescinded the invitation immediately.” He clarified that the MP from his party took full responsibility for the invitation.
