New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment within the Ministry of Defence of the Department of Military Affairs to be headed as a 4-Star General Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The Chief of Defence Staff will have salary equivalent to Service Chiefs and will function as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs. Outgoing Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is likely to be named the first CDS, according to government sources. Gen Rawat is due on December 31 for retirement.
