Congress party has said that it hasn’t got any invitations to meet US President Donald Trump during his India visit scheduled this month. Speaking to reporters Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said, “We have not received any invitation from the government side and neither from the US. If any invitation will come then we will take a view on it.”

Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad is expected to be invited for President Trump’s reception but the party chief is yet to get an invite. As a practice, visiting foreign dignitaries meet opposition party leaders, e.g. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajpaksa met Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh during his visit.

Sharma pointed out that India shouldn’t allow US to play big brother role in diplomatic relations and the government needs to adhere to safeguarding sovereignty, self-respect and national interest of India during Trump’s visit. Congress agreed that Trump’s visit was pivotal in furthering relationships between India and US in defence, economy, nuclear energy, space, agriculture and technology.
