New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking in the Lok Sabha, said Wednesday that the Special Protection Group Act would be amended to allow the Prime Minister and his family to have such security cover that they live with him at his official residence. The amended provision also makes a case for providing security to a former prime minister and his family for a period of five years. Former prime ministers and their family members are currently being provided with protection based on a "security assessment," and there is no deadline for SPG security. The SPG Act, 1998 restricted former prime ministers to one year after they dismantled office to provide security cover. The minister accused previous governments of "diluting" the original law of 1998 from time to time, an apparent reference to the earlier decision to cover the elite SPG to members of the Gandhi family, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka.
