New Delhi: At a party meeting on Thursday, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rejected  a proposal that she assume the top position in the party after her brother Rahul. The move by Priyanka Gandhi aims to strongly spike an concept that has been endorsed over the past few weeks by several senior Congress officials.

Captain Amarinder Singh, chief minister of Punjab, and Shashi Tharoor, lawmaker from Thiruvananthapuram, supported Priyanka Gandhi for the post of president of the party.

The proposal went up again this morning to discuss preparations for the birthday of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on August 20 at a conference of general secretaries of Congress and in-charge of states.
