The Supreme Court on Monday halted the Jammu & Kashmir police's attempt to draw Major Aditya Singh into the legal proceedings as the top court stayed a probe by the state police into an FIR on the Shopian firing where three civilians were killed.

The court said, "It is a case of an army officer, not an ordinary criminal." The Court has stayed all further actions up until April 24, when the court is likely to give its ruling.

The court ordered a stay after the state police informed the bench that Major Aditya Singh has been named in the FIR as an officer leading his unit and not as an accused.

Three civilians were killed in a firing at Shopian when the Armymen fired on a stone pelting mob on January 27, causing widespread anger across the state and due to which the J&K CM ordered a probe on the issue.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, on February 12, asked the state police to not take any coercive action against Major Aditya Singh after a petition was filed by his father LT Col Karamveer Singh who sought to quash the FIR against his son. Karamveer Singh had also stated that his son did nothing wrong and that, he was provoked by the stone pelting mob.
