Media Eye News Bureau: BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy introduced a private member’s bill for a countrywide ban on cow slaughter in the Rajya Sabha. He withdrew it after the government intervened and assured that steps have been taken to protect the animal.

Swamy asserted that the government would hopefully impose a voluntary cess to ensure the safety of cows after they cease to provide milk and hoped that cow shelters be set up and that an authority should be created to stabilise the bovine population.

Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan supported the bill, he said “We should warn the leaders from the United States and Israel that if you love us, love our culture also,” he added, “Why should we be friends with the US? If you eat beef, then you are our enemy. If you trade in beef, then you are our enemy.”

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh issued a statement where she sought to assure Swamy as she stated that steps have been taken for the protection and as well as promotion of the cow. She further requested him to withdraw the bill.
