New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for coming to Wayanad and assessing the situation in the area devastated by landslides.

Declaring it a “good decision,” the Congress leader thanked the PM for inspecting the situation and expressed his confidence that this tragedy would be officially recognized as a “national disaster.”

“Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision. I am confident that once the Prime Minister sees the extent of the devastation firsthand, he will declare it a national disaster,” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Wayanad, Kerala, a region devastated by landslides, and meet with those who have survived the calamity that struck the southern state last month.

The Prime Minister is expected to arrive on a special jet that is expected to land in Kannur.

PM Modi will use a helicopter to survey the landslide-affected districts from Kannur. Then, he will visit a few aid camps that currently house over 10,000 people.

PM Modi is set to arrive at Kannur escorted by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.

Both the Congress-led opposition and the Vijayan-led state administration have insisted that the central government label the catastrophe a national calamity.

As of now, 413 individuals have died in the tragedy, and 152 are still unaccounted for.

The announcement of PM Modi’s visit came hours after Rahul Gandhi urged the Union government to declare the Wayanad landslide as a national disaster, given the devastation it has left behind.

On August 1, Rahul Gandhi and his sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the landslide-affected Chooralmala area in Kerala’s Wayanad.
