ME NEWS BUREAU: An investigation report by the Kerala Home department reveals that there is no evidence of love jihad, a love trap activity under which young Muslim men and boys target young girls belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam, in the state.

Though many girls have been converted to Islam as part of their marriage, it can't be considered as love jihad, according to the investigation report. The Kerala government conducted the study about the conversions to Islam in the state with the help of Central intelligence agencies.

The report stands contrary to the assumptions made by the former police chief T.P. Senkumar who said that love jihad was practised in the state.

Mr, Senkumar had said that the police had made probe in two cases in relation with love jihad as per the advice of the Kerala High Court. He also said that it was identified the girls were trapped by the trained youths by feigning love in both cases.

The investigation report shows that 7299 people had embraced Islam from 2011 to 2016. 1216 people had converted to Islam on an average every year.

The investigation showed that as many as 61 percent of the 7,229 cases analyzed by them had embraced Islam for the sake of love. The probe report cited family problems (12 percent), poverty (8 percent), social reasons (8 percent) and mental disturbances (7 percent) as the other key reasons for conversion.

A significant finding of the investigation is that a lion’s share (82 persons) of the converts were Hindus. Christians, who constitute about 18 percent of the state’s population, accounted for 17.9 percent of the conversions.

The Central Home Ministry is mainly trying to find out the financial deals behind the religious conversion.
