Keeping Pets in Housing Societies

Asmita College of Law in association with the Maharashtra State Co-operative Housing Society Federation organized a webinar on “Housing Societies and Pets (Responsibilities and Duties)”, on 25 July 2021. 

Avinash Chaudhari, Director, State Co-operative Housing Society Federation welcomed the participants that totalled more than 650 in number, in the presence of honourable guests: Sitaram Rane, the Chairman of the federation, Suhas Patwardhan, the Vice Chairman and Chhaya Ajgaonkar, its secretary. 

Prof. Keshav Tiwari, Head, Free Legal Aid, Asmita College, and his team made a presentation on the relationship between pets and their owners. The surveys were conducted through various interviews including police officers, animal lovers, environmentalists, pet owners and members of the residential societies, etc. 

Participants were given in-depth information on the problems they face and the solutions for those problems. The information collected also included heart-wrenching crimes against pets and animals, which were explained in detail during the webinar. Prof. Tiwari spoke on the various articles in the Constitution of India and the various clauses in the Indian Penal Code relating to the rights and duties of pet owners and other residents of the society.

The webinar also highlighted that if the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has to be successful at every level of society, pet owners should start carrying pop bags with them when they take their animals for walks.

After the presentation, Advocate Shriprasad Parab gave an in-depth analysis of the Articles of the Constitution of India as well as the directive principles of the state policy of the Constitution and explained how these articles can be taken into consideration while talking about the rights and duties of pets and pet owners.

Prof. Tiwari reiterated that Asmita College and their Free Legal Aid department are committed to bringing awareness in every section of the society for the proper harmonization of coexistence between animals and human beings which will help in maintaining the balance of nature.

Prof. Keshav Tiwari concluded his presentation with the quotes by Mahatma Gandhi: “The Greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.
