ME News Bureau: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to be all set to form its sixth consecutive government in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after overcoming a hard contest from the Congress. Counting is in progress at 37 centers for the Gujarat assembly election result 2017.

While the state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and deputy CM Nitin Patel, are leading respectively in Rajkot West and Mehsana, Jitu Vaghani, the state unit chief, is trailing.

The BJP is currently ahead in 103 seats, the Congress leading in 76.

The BJP has been in power in Gujarat since the last 22 years, a trend the the Congress party had hoped to break with help from youth leaders Hardik Patel, Jignesh Mewani and Alpesh Thakor.

The BJP had won 119 seats in the 182-member Assembly, while the Congress won 57, in the 2012 Assembly elections.
