New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, will miss the first round of the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy after injuring his hand during Mumbai’s pre-season match at the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, last week.
The right-handed Mumbai hitter is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a routine evaluation and has been told to relax, according to ESPNcricinfo.

The middle-order batsman did not bat for Mumbai in the second innings of last week’s encounter against TNCA XI due to a hand injury sustained while fielding on day three. However, the Mumbai team management described the move as prudent, as Suryakumar hoped to play the Duleep Trophy to strengthen his Test prospects ahead of the busy season.

The 33-year-old, who hasn’t played first-class cricket in over a year, agreed to participate in the pre-season Buchi Babu Tournament to prepare for the impending two-Test series against Bangladesh later this month.

Suryakumar, who played only one Test against Australia earlier this year, has been picked to India’s C squad headed by Ruturaj Gaikwad. On September 5, the team will play their debut match against Shreyas Iyer’s India D at Anantapur, while India A will face India B at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Earlier, pacers Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik were ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to illness. At the same time, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed from the India B team, but no replacement was announced. Navdeep Saini and Gaurav Yadav were named as Siraj and Malik’s replacements for the India B and C squads, respectively.
