Four people died and 27 others were wounded following a stampede today at the Kachua Loknath Temple in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Janmashtami's occasion. There are as many as five people in a critical medical condition.
The people had been under a store, according to sources, whose walls collapsed because of heavy rains, leading to a stampede. Bengal's chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, visited the National Medical College and met the wounded.. She also announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for the deceased's family, Rs 1 lakh for critically wounded persons, and Rs 50,000 for minor injured persons.
