In a huge relief for flood-hit Kerala where 57 individuals have died so far, rain subsided on Sunday in many locations, allowing resumption of rescue activities in landslide-hit regions of Wayanad and Malappuram while a red alert remains over many neighboring districts of Karnataka which was also devastated by floods.

For the second consecutive year, heavy rain in the previous week had caused a huge flood in the state that caused havoc in much of the state. In addition to the 57 individuals who died, 60 individuals are still feared to be trapped in slush and mud caused by landslides.

The evening is scheduled for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to visit his constituency in Wayanad. He's going to camp for two days, Mullapally Ramachandran, head of  Congress in Kerala, said.
