Anupama Nair
In the last part, I spoke about how beautiful it is in winter in “yeh haseen wadiyan” and the myth people have about how hot it is in India. I then spoke about snow-laden places in “Firdaus e Jahan” Kashmir. Now plan your trip to some more places that have a carpet of snow for more than four months.
Shimla, Manali, Kulfri, and Khajjar, in Himachal Pradesh
Shimla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh and was the favorite place of the British due to the nearness to Delhi. Shimla is one of my favorite places because of its revitalizing views of great scenery during winters. This hill station with colonial architecture is one of the best places to enjoy snowfall without facing extremely cold weather you find in Kashmir or elsewhere. The blockbuster movie “Kudrat” on reincarnation was shot here. Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini acted in the movie. Remember the song “Hume Tumse Pyar Kitna” and you can see the beauty of Shimla.
Manali is the next place to enjoy snowfall in its full ice-covered glory. The snowy mountains and the pollution-less blue sky is a sight to behold in winter. Skiing, mountaineering, and ice-skating are some of the activities you can enjoy here. Kufri, is a glistening land of snow during winters and is a hub of tourists. Tall trees add to the beauty of this place. The serenity found in Khajjar is exceptional and you can also enjoy skiing here. This little hill station is the perfect winter place for all the snow-lovers. It looks like an artist's imagination of winter in its full glory.
Katao, in Sikkim
Katao is located in the Indian state of Sikkim near Gangtok. With plenty of snowfall during winters, you can get an unusual view of one of the highest snow-clad mountains and vast cover of snow here.
Tawang, in Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang is a sight to behold during winters. The place is full of natural beauty and is perfect if you want to find some peace after the chaos in your daily life. You can also visit many Buddhist monasteries and enjoy the scenery.
Lava, and Darjeeling in West Bengal
Lava is rarely featured in the winter destination lists, but this offbeat place looks nothing short of a snow paradise with its lush trees and captivating view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Apart from trekking, this place offers a great opportunity for bird watching too. Darjeeling is another beautiful place to visit and a top winter destination. The British developed it as a summer getaway from the sweltering summer of Calcutta and you can see the colonial glimpses even today. It is still famous for its tea industry, its views of the world's third-highest mountain Kanchanjunga, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO Heritage site.
Auli, Dhanaulti, Almora, Nainital, and Mussoorie in Uttarakhand
If you are looking for a fascinating skiing adventure, Auli is the picture-perfect destination for it. It has skiing slopes that are 2500-3000 meters high and will give you a great deal of adrenaline rush. Also, you can enjoy the surroundings having vast forest cover and thickly jacketed snowy hills. Dhanaulti is isolated from the overflowing group of tourists and is famous for its snowy blanket that provides peace and tranquility. The dark green forests here are perfect for camping and give you a chance to enjoy the chilly breeze and enjoy the winter season.
Almora has a picturesque natural beauty and you can see the breathtaking views of the Himalayas and is considered one of the most beautiful winter destinations in India. You will find a vast sheet of snow as far as you can see and is a sight to behold. Nainital hasn't witnessed snow in a few years, but it still has always been a place to see at least once a year. The place is famous for beautiful lakes, and boat rides are very popular. Mussoorie is another location, with a breathtaking view in winter, and is known as the “Queen of the Hills”. It is not only an ideal winter destination but also a popular getaway from the Subcontinent heat during summers.
I sure have made plans to visit a few of these places, if coronavirus is brought under control. In a few years I sure I will visit them all.
